Muchelney and the Somerset Levels is one of the most unchanged and distinctive landscapes of Lowland Britain.

There are many interesting walks on the wetlands which are rich in flora, fauna and birdlife. Well situated for the Parrett Trail and many good cycle routes around South Somerset and the Levels.

Come and explore our ancient Abbey with its Abbot's House, now in the care of English Heritage, and the National Trust's restored 14th Century Priest House, arguably the finest in the country. Discover the churchs' uninhibited 'painted angels' and the 13th Century tiles. Visit John Leach's internationally-renowned pottery with its well displayed shop.

Muchelney Abbey

Muchelney AbbeyThe ruins of a Benedictine Abbey, with well preserved Abbot's House, founded in the 10th Century on the site of an earlier abbey.

Open daily 1st April to 30 September from 10am - 6pm, and 10am - 5pm in October.

The Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul

The Parish Church of St. Peter and St. PaulCompleted in the early 15th Century the perpendicular style church was built by the Abbots of the neighbouring abbey. Of interest is the ceiling, with tudor painting of uninhibited angels and the stained glass from around 1200 AD. Around the altar floor, tiles are from the 12th Century lady chapel of the abbey.

Open daily in summer.

Muchelney Pottery

John Leach, oldest grandson of Bernard Leach and son of David Leach, continues the family tradition in the tranquil setting of his own pottery. He works with one other master potter, Nick Rees, and a student - handthrowing and wood firing a range of stoneware pots.

Open all year, Monday to Saturday 9am - 1pm, 2pm - 5pm.

The Langport and River Parrett Visitor Centre

Take the time to explore South Somerset and the levels on foot - enjoy the wildlife and flora and fauna at first hand using the Parrett Trail Guide. Follow the course of the river from source to mouth and relish in some of lowland Britain's unchanged landscape.

Cycles for hire to suit all tastes and ages. Trailer bikes, buggies and child seats.
