Caravans, Camping and Fishing…
I googled ‘Dog friendly’ camping and thankfully Thorney Lakes camping came up- as it was absolutely lovely! We stayed with 2 large huskies, a 4 year old and a six year old boy a 5 man tent and a landrover.
The pitches are in a lovely flat traditional somerset cider orchard- which also provided entertainment for the kids – chucking apples! and shade for us and the dogs.
A short walk to gorgeous little fishing lakes, and woodland trails, lots of wildlife and quaint little villages with pubs, a pottery and Muchelney abbey for sightseeing.
There were other families with kids and dogs, but it wasn’t noisy or overcrowded. Perfect.
We arrived at Thorney Lakes for my son’s wedding at Almonry Barn in Mulchelney. What a gem!! Beautiful unspoilt spot and so quiet and peaceful. Huge area for tents and caravans but you were able to pitch where you like. No straight boring lines here! Plenty of facilities and they were always clean and tidy. The lakes are a hidden gem whether you fish or not and lovely for a stroll round. The owners of the site are really friendly and helpful. There is plenty to do in the area ie Glastonbury, Wells, Muchelney Abbey and the Clarks Village. Or you can be lazy and just lie in a lounger and watch the wild life. Fantastic place. We will definitely return.
Had a lovely week at Thorney lakes…clean showers, plenty of space for kids to run around. loads top do nearby..would definitely go back..although it was busy when we were there, still plenty of space between caravans or tents
Last week we spent 3 nights at Thorney Lakes with 30+ other families and the CAOT Team . Every Year we are welcomed on the site by the Owner and his family who make us feel so welcome.
The facilities here are very good .There is ample hot water for washing pots and pans , the toilets are clean and maintained the shower units are spacious and again great hot water .They have a coin operated washing machine if you need to do a spot of washing (very useful).
They have a wall of information literature and a phone number list of local take outs who deliver to the site from nearby Langport.
The flat site is very quiet at night with only the very rare car going past. Take a wander down to the Lakes where you will find a Toilet block and tables n benches to have a picnic. All together this is a very relaxing site.Yes they hold events during the year on the site so if you want to know when these are on just ring and ask before you book.Thank you for another great CAOT Fest and we will see you next year
Really nice site situated in great location for travelling around South Somerset & the West Country – easy wide open spaces to camp or park up – Owners very helpful & supportive during visit – as well as the campsite with its excellent showers & toilets complex you have freedom to explore the lakes which are a delight for accompanied children & adults to explore.
Local villages are a very short drive away for your camping supplies & nearby Langport has bike & boat hire (check for availability) for exploring the River Parrett. 😎
A level campsite in a beautiful and well-maintained apple orchard. Good facilities: a kitchen with three sinks and plenty of hot water, a washing machine, free showers, tourist info and wifi. Unfortunately there was no soap in both loos, and both showers and loos weren’t cleaned during the three days we stayed (at the beginning of July).
Can also recommend the carvery at the Langport Hotel in nearby Langport (Tuesdays to Thursdays) and the well-stocked Kingsbury Community Shop and Café.
Thorney lakes has done it again….
What have they done?
Nothing is the answer, apart from keeping the site spotlessly clean and tidy.
No fancy clubhouses or arcades, just a peaceful, relaxing, pet friendly place to unwind and escape the hustle and bustle of every day life.
Not our first visit and certainly not our last.
Thank you for having us.
Plenty of hook up points for power (a long cable may be needed) and lots of water points.
Walking and watching the wildlife was also great. They cut paths around the perimeter of there wild fields for you to walk on. A first for me was a Kingfisher and a Grass snake swimming on the water. We lost count of the birds we saw, along with plenty of Rabbits and such like.
If you want a lovely simple quite site to stay at that will relax your sole then this is it.
Already looking forward to going back there.

A great campsite with lovely owners. Level well maintained pitches with a good number of electric hookups. Clean toilet and shower block. Perfect quiet rural retreat.
Great campsite, great location and owners are very nice and helpful. Stayed over bank holiday weekend and found the site very peaceful and well kept. Good size level pitches, will definitely return.
Friendly staff! excellent location!
Facilities simple but clean and tidy.
Not near any main roads
Good community shop quite close
Thorney Lakes are beautiful, if you like fishing or just strolling around looking at the wildlife, the camp site is first class, park where you like and have as much room as you like. Reasonable prices. Lots to see in the area.
I love visiting here, sometimes I just come up here for a few minutes to get out the house as I live locally and it’s so nice sitting here as it’s so peaceful. The lakes are beautiful and there is actually a lot of wildlife to see here.
Lovely and peaceful, clean and always tidy. Sally and co extremely helpful. Great you can take your transport to lakes, which is a added bonus, hubby caught 11 fish over 2 days, between 16lb and 20lb.
I love this place, it’s so nice & chilled.
There are walking and cycling trails all over the area.
Beautiful bit of country side.
They owners are really nice too.
Thanks again for having us 😁
Really lovely place. We had a group of friends together to catch up this weekend which worked well with social distancing. The staff were very pleasant and friendly. The facilities were great and tidy.
Well worth a visit recommend this place to anyone who wants a nice quiet place to pitch a tent or park a camper van or caravan.
No light pollution ideal for star gazing.
Cycling, walking, fishing.
Real fantastic place to go old or young the staff are friendly and helpful and the fishing 🎣 lake’s are beautiful. The lake’s can be hard to fish 🐟 if the weather is up and down but still enjoyable and the thrill of a catch definitely will be going back again in the near future Xx
